This story is from August, but is so appropriate for this time of year that it only seemed right to post it.
There are a lot of good people in the world. Raden Soemawinata is one of them.
Sue Drummond and her Maltese-Shih Tzu mix Bibi went for a walk on a pier in Melbourne on a very windy day in August. One particularly fierce gust of wind estimated at 60 mph picked up Bibi and landed him in the rough waters of the bay. Drummond helplessly watched her beloved dog being tossed by the waves and weighed whether she could save him. Drummond explained, “I thought he was going to sink and then maybe I wouldn’t be able to find him. But I didn’t really want to hop in the water either because I wasn’t quite sure if I could make it to shore with a struggling dog.”
Fortunately for Bibi and Sue, Raden Soemawinata happened to be on the pier at the same time to scatter his grandmother’s ashes. Soemawinata saw that Bibi was struggling and quickly stripped off his suit and jumped into the water.
When asked about his decision to save Bibi, Soemawinata responded, “It was pretty cold and windy but it wasn’t such a hard decision to jump in. It wasn’t such a great feat.” To further downplay his heroic actions, he added, “I’m a part-time model, so getting into my jocks isn’t so different to what I do for work.”
Its nice to know that heroes do exist when we need them.
