Dogs bring us a lot of joy and unconditional love, but a recent study has found that they are also at the heart of about three family disputes a week – amounting to almost 2,000 arguments during a dog’s lifetime.
The survey, conducted by Esure’s pet insurance division, found that family fights tend to revolve around issues of responsibility of duty regarding the family dog such as walking, feeding and cleaning up the backyard. Of the participating families, the majority of respondents said that they fight more about their children than they do their dog, but 14% said they fight much more about the dog then the kids. 17% of the families said that the fights have gotten so heated that one person slept in another room, and 1/4th of the participants have said that the fights have ended with one of the family members storming off. Sadly, about the same number of families have said that the fights have gotten so bad that they considered getting rid of their dog to end the strive.
So what is it about dog ownership that causes families to have so many blowups? Nikki Sellers, Head of Pet Insurance at esure, said, “Owning a dog is not dissimilar to having a baby. Round the clock care and responsibility throughout a dog’s life can become tiresome for any pet owner but should never be overlooked. Maintaining a dog’s physical health through exercise plus regular stimulation to avoid them running riot around the house should at least help avoid some arguments. A healthier dog may also lead to fewer costly trips to the vet too but for advice on how to look after a dog properly, owners should seek professional help.”
